[Saba Sports News] Jimmy Butler might claim that a contract extension from the Miami Heat isn’t a priority, but that might not be the full story.
On a recent episode of “Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective,” Windhorst discussed Butler’s standing with the Heat, saying, “As far as I know, Jimmy Butler wants to be in Miami. His goal is to get another contract from Miami.”
Windhorst suggested that Butler may forgo his player option for next season to explore free agency instead. Butler is set to earn $48.8 million this year, with a $52.4 million player option for the following season. He last extended his contract with Miami in 2021 for three years at $146.4 million.
After a disappointing season for the Heat, Pat Riley expressed frustration with Butler, which may have been a tactic to get him focused for this year. Butler could be accepting the challenge and aiming for a new deal.
At Heat media day, Butler acknowledged he needs to prove he’s still a “major part of winning.” Entering his sixth season with Miami, he has led the team to the playoffs each year, including two NBA Finals and a conference finals appearance.
