[Saba Sports News] Joakim Noah recently appeared on the Out The Mud podcast, where he revisited his intense rivalry with LeBron James during his time with the Chicago Bulls. Noah reflected on James’ showboating behavior during their matchups, which often fueled his competitive fire.
“He was arrogant, and he was a stunter,” Noah said. “There were moments when you’re down 20 points, and he’s shooting a free throw with his left hand, dancing all over the court—I wasn’t feeling it. You lose to somebody five times in the playoffs, there’s nothing funny about that. I don’t want something bad to happen to him, I’m just a competitor. Every year you’re losing and know you have to get through him—that’s where it came from.”
Noah became one of LeBron’s fiercest rivals in the Eastern Conference, regularly facing him during high-stakes matchups. As a key player for a strong Bulls team, Noah was known for his relentless energy and ability to agitate opponents.
Despite LeBron often getting the better of him, Noah managed to get under James’ skin in ways few other players could.
Their rivalry intensified as LeBron moved between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat, delivering dominant performances against Noah’s Bulls. LeBron averaged 29.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 5.7 assists in 24 games against Noah between the 2007-08 and 2014-15 seasons.
However, Noah’s defensive prowess, highlighted by his 2014 Defensive Player of the Year award and two All-Star appearances, made him one of LeBron’s toughest competitors during that era.
In recent years, Noah has softened his stance toward James, even expressing admiration for his longevity. Reflecting on LeBron’s continued dominance at the age of 39, Noah praised his ability to perform at such a high level late in his career.
While the rivalry between Noah and LeBron was marked by intense battles and animosity, it’s clear that both players respect each other’s contributions to the game.
Noah’s willingness to give James his due recognition highlights the growth in their dynamic, as LeBron approaches the twilight of his legendary career.
