[Saba Sports News] Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard had nothing but praise for former coach Gregg Popovich following the legendary coach’s retirement announcement.
Popovich revealed on Friday that he would be stepping down after 29 seasons as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, transitioning into a new role as the team’s president of basketball operations.
Leonard, speaking after the Clippers’ postseason elimination, reflected on his time under Popovich, who coached him during his first seven NBA seasons.
“He coached until pretty much he couldn’t,” Leonard said. “I appreciate everything he’s done for me coming into the league. He helped build my foundation and showed me how to win. I want to congratulate him on his career—and more importantly, I hope he stays healthy.”
Leonard was once viewed as Tim Duncan’s successor in San Antonio, but a rift during the 2017–18 season over his injury rehab ultimately led to a trade to Toronto, where he won a championship.
While some Spurs fans still hold a grudge over Leonard’s exit, Popovich has consistently defended him—and Saturday’s comments showed that the mutual respect remains intact.
