[Saba Sports News] On the ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski shared details of a major NBA trade that almost happened involving Kobe Bryant. During the mid-point of Bryant’s career, he wanted out of the Lakers, and the Detroit Pistons were close to acquiring him.
“There was a deal with the Pistons involving Tayshaun Prince, Rip Hamilton, and a bunch of picks for Kobe,” said Woj. “The two teams had agreed on terms, and it was up to Kobe. He went to Jerry Buss’s house during a period when he wanted out but eventually changed his mind. The trade was essentially agreed upon, but Kobe decided, ‘Nah, I don’t wanna do this.'”
After winning a three-peat and trading away Shaquille O’Neal, the Lakers hit a low point, and Bryant grew restless. Seeing O’Neal succeed with the Heat, Kobe wanted success, even if it meant leaving the Lakers.
In 2007, Bryant requested a trade, with the Pistons at the top of his list. Despite having a no-trade clause, giving him the final say, Bryant chose to stay with the Lakers. According to Joe Dumars, Kobe met with Jerry Buss and was given two days to decide. Ultimately, he turned down the Pistons, who then had to look elsewhere for their next superstar.
