[Saba Sports News] LeBron James opted out of his Los Angeles Lakers contract as expected, but he is widely anticipated to re-sign with the team. The terms of his next contract may depend on the Lakers’ moves in free agency.
James and his agent, Rich Paul, have informed the Lakers that he is willing to take less than the max salary if it allows the team to afford another impact player, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN. By taking a pay cut, James could enable the Lakers to utilize the full mid-level exception of $12.9 million.
James is interested in the Lakers pursuing a playmaker like Klay Thompson or James Harden with the MLE or an established big man such as Jonas Valanciunas. However, if the Lakers cannot add such a player, James will request the max salary.
James’ flexibility could significantly benefit the Lakers. For instance, pursuing Thompson seems more feasible, though it’s uncertain if the MLE would be enough to secure his signing. If successful, James’ willingness to take less money would be a key factor.
