[Saba Sports News] The NBA community was deeply affected by the passing of Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo, a towering presence on and off the court.
LeBron James, during the Lakers’ media day, shared a memorable personal encounter with Mutombo that showcased the fierce competitiveness and respect between the two.
LeBron recalled how Mutombo fractured his face with an elbow during a game on his birthday in Cleveland.
“It was my first stint in Cleveland, and he was in Houston. I went to the hole and caught one of those Dikembe elbows… He fractured my face, and I went to the hospital that night.”
Despite the painful incident, LeBron’s tone remained respectful, acknowledging Mutombo’s greatness.
Mutombo’s legacy went beyond his career stats—he was a four-time Defensive Player of the Year and renowned for his off-court humanitarian work through the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, which focused on improving healthcare in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
LeBron’s story serves as a testament to the mutual respect between elite athletes.
While Mutombo’s passing marks the end of an era, his legacy of strength, compassion, and influence will continue to inspire future generations.
