[Saba Sports News] Kenneth Jonassen, singles director of Malaysia’s national badminton team, revealed that Lee Zii Jia, a men’s singles independent player, was forced to miss the first day of the joint training session this Wednesday due to a minor ankle sprain.
Lee, currently ranked 80th in the world, has been plagued by persistent ankle and back injuries for more than a year. His form has been inconsistent this season: he crashed out in the first round in five out of six tournaments, reached only the quarterfinals at the Thailand Masters, and even fell in the qualifying round of the Orléans Masters.
However, Jonassen remained calm when discussing Lee’s injury, suggesting it was only a minor issue. He expressed confidence that Lee would overcome the setback, recover soon and return to competition.
Jonassen added that the Malaysian badminton squad is stepping up preparations for the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals to be held in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3. The team will soon head to Herning, Denmark, for a 10-day pre-tournament training camp, which he described as crucial for building team cohesion.
