[Saba Sports News] While most players would be excited for the chance to play in the Thomas Cup, free agent Lee Zii Jia made several demands to the Badminton Association of Malaysia before the tournament began. Recently, Lee Chong Wei, chairman of the Malaysian Badminton Association’s performance committee, confirmed in an interview the rumors that Lee Zii Jia asked for “pocket money” to participate in the Thomas Cup. Lee Chong Wei said he would meet with the former All England Open Badminton Championships champion on Friday at the Malaysia National Badminton Academy in Bukit Jalil. At that meeting, Lee Zii Jia will decide whether to represent the Malaysian team in the world’s top team event.
Reportedly, the talks stem from a controversy during the 2024 Thomas Cup held in Chengdu, China, when Lee Zii Jia’s team requested compensation over image rights for his participation with the national team. The move provoked polarized reactions at the time: some fans criticized Lee’s actions, while others defended his stance on commercial rights as a player operating independently outside the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s system.
The editor believes Lee Zii Jia’s refusal to represent the Malaysian team is the result of a combination of professional ambitions, conflict with the system, injury concerns, and psychological pressure. He has chosen a more autonomous but also more difficult professional path that differs from the traditional national team model and does not obligate him to play for the country for free.
