[Saba Sports News] Malaysian badminton star Lee Zii Jia recently announced via his studio that he has officially returned to the national team and will represent Malaysia at the 2026 Thomas Cup. He voluntarily waives portrait rights fees. The news has drawn nationwide attention since its publication. In fact, Lee Zii Jia had long been at odds with the Malaysian Badminton Association (BAM); a few years ago he left the national team and became a free agent largely because portrait rights, sponsorship deals, and the national team’s distribution of benefits could not reach an agreement. There was a previous Thomas Cup where the dispute over portrait rights compensation caused talks to break down, and Lee Zii Jia ultimately did not participate, which sparked substantial public controversy. This time, his return has been facilitated with significant help from Lee Chong Wei, the legendary star. Chong Wei personally stepped in, held talks with Lee Zii Jia and his coach, and gave Lee Zii Jia time to consider. Lee Zii Jia also showed sincerity by announcing his return without portrait rights fees.
I believe this return is a win-win for both sides. For Lee Zii Jia, participating in a major event like the Thomas Cup not only preserves his career ceiling but also reverses previous negative perceptions, allowing the public to see anew his dedication to national glory.”
