[Saba Sports News] At the pre-race press conference for the F1 Australian Grand Prix, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton once again expressed his hope for Formula 1 to return to the African continent. He called for African nations to unite more and take control of their own developmental destiny. Since the South African Grand Prix in 1993, F1 has not held a race in Africa for over thirty years. In recent years, several countries, including South Africa, Rwanda, and Morocco, have shown interest in hosting events. Discussions about bringing F1 back to Africa have been ongoing, but there has been no substantial progress to date.
During the press conference, Hamilton revealed that he has traveled to Africa multiple times during the offseason over the past few years, having visited ten countries and being deeply attracted to the continent’s culture and natural environment. He disclosed that he has been privately advocating for F1’s return to Africa over the past six or seven years, communicating with relevant stakeholders in hopes of bringing the sport back to the continent. In his view, F1 currently hosts races in nearly all major continents around the world, but the absence of races in Africa is unreasonable.
