[Saba Sports News] Luka Doncic was reportedly disappointed after being traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in a shocking move last month. His initial reaction led many to question whether the five-time All-Star would stay in L.A. beyond his current contract. Now, his father is giving Lakers fans a reason to feel optimistic.
In a recent interview with Pop TV in Slovenia, Sasa Doncic shared his thoughts on Luka’s early days with the Lakers. A clip from the interview, which circulated on social media, featured Sasa offering what some see as a major hint about his son’s long-term outlook in Los Angeles.
Asked about the challenges of playing for a team like the Lakers, Sasa responded with high praise, “Yes, that’s true, but from what I hear, celebrities are coming back to the games. Maybe even because of Luka,” he said. “That should be motivation for him. Luka plays better under pressure. I believe he was born for this city, and this city was made for him. It fits his character. I believe he’ll succeed there.”
While that doesn’t guarantee Doncic will re-sign with the Lakers after the 2025–26 season—when he can become a free agent—it’s a strong vote of confidence in his current situation. Much of his decision could depend on what the Lakers’ post-LeBron James era looks like. If they can present a solid vision, they may be able to convince Doncic to be the next face of the franchise.
Doncic has averaged 27.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 7.8 assists in 18 games with the Lakers. The team remains firmly in the playoff hunt and looks to stay competitive barring any setbacks.
Though reports suggest Luka is taking a wait-and-see approach, his father’s comments make one thing clear—so far, L.A. seems to be a good fit.
