[Saba Sports News] According to Spanish media reports, the Madrid Provincial Court supported La Liga’s appeal against the ruling of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) and consequently rejected Real Madrid and Barcelona’s application to register the “El Clasico” national derby trademark in Spain. The court stated that this decision is based on the fact that the trademarks these clubs are trying to register conflict with those previously used by La Liga, as they are highly similar in terms of name, sound, and concept. After both Real Madrid and Barcelona applied to register the “El Clasico” trademark, La Liga appealed against it. The OEPM initially opposed it, but after both clubs appealed, they won and obtained trademark rights. La Liga then filed a lawsuit with the Madrid Provincial Court, which supported La Liga’s appeal against the OEPM, ruling the decision invalid and rejecting Real Madrid and Barcelona’s registration of the “MCF C FCB EL CLASICO” trademark. The court subsequently ordered the OEPM to ensure compliance with the ruling through relevant measures, while noting that an appeal could be filed, provided it meets certain conditions, and must be submitted within 20 days after notification.
