[Saba Sports News] According to British media reports, Australian legendary goalkeeper Mark Bosnich suffered a torn quadriceps and requires surgery after diving to save a penalty taken by former Australian Football League chief executive MacLachlan at a World Cup promotional event in Sydney. The 54-year-old Bosnich pulled off a string of penalty saves at a celebrity shootout hosted by Tabcorp on Friday, showcasing form reminiscent of his prime years. However, during sudden death, MacLachlan struck his penalty down the middle. Having thrown himself to make the stop, Bosnich clutched his right leg immediately and was unable to get back to his feet. Spectators initially thought he was joking, only realising the severity of his injury when he removed his gloves and limped off the pitch for treatment. MacLachlan later commented: “I hit it straight down the middle; he overcommitted to the save.” Bosnich received ice treatment and remained at the venue for observation before being transferred to hospital for scans. Tests confirmed a quadriceps tear, which necessitates an operation.
The editor believes that if Bosnich was putting on an act, his acting skills would be incredible. Born in Sydney, Mark Bosnich started his professional career at Manchester United before spending seven seasons with Aston Villa, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s elite goalkeepers. He returned to Manchester United for the 1999–2000 campaign and claimed a Premier League title with the club. Bosnich earned 17 caps representing the Australian national team.
