[Saba Sports News] The Toronto Raptors have made a stunning front-office move following the NBA Draft.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Raptors and longtime executive Masai Ujiri have mutually agreed to part ways. Ujiri was entering the final year of his contract.
The timing of the decision comes as a surprise, as major front-office shakeups are typically made right after the season, not after the draft.
Ujiri remained with the team through this year’s draft, during which Toronto selected South Carolina forward Collin Murray-Boyles at No. 9 overall and Florida guard Alijah Martin in the second round. Notably, Murray-Boyles didn’t appear thrilled about being picked by the Raptors.
Ujiri had served as the team’s top executive since 2013 and is regarded as one of the premier minds in basketball. He was the architect behind Toronto’s 2019 championship run, including the bold trade for Kawhi Leonard.
Prior to his time with the Raptors, Ujiri built a strong résumé with the Denver Nuggets and was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2013.
Given his reputation and track record, the 54-year-old is expected to draw interest from other teams — and may already have his next opportunity lined up.
