[Saba Sports News] F1 commentator Will Buxton recently shared a past story about Max Verstappen’s thoughtful gesture at the 2015 Spa circuit, which brought a long-awaited smile to his father’s face. This seemingly lighthearted joke has become an unforgettable warm memory for Buxton. The story dates back to the 2014 Florida Winter Series when Verstappen, who had just transitioned from karting to single-seater racing, competed alongside Buxton at Palm Beach. After that, their professional paths quickly diverged: Verstappen rose to become a four-time F1 world champion, ranking among the greatest drivers in history, while Buxton established himself in racing media and now serves as the chief commentator for Fox Sports.
During the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix, Buxton’s parents came to watch the race at Spa. At the time, his father’s health was failing, and he would sadly pass away six months later. That day, a sudden downpour forced Buxton’s family to run into the Red Bull Racing team’s hospitality unit for shelter, where they coincidentally met Verstappen. Upon learning they were Buxton’s parents, Verstappen introduced himself and jokingly told Buxton’s father, “Buxton taught me a lot of skills.” This playful remark brought a smile to Buxton’s father’s face, becoming a proud moment that Buxton later recounted.
The editor believes that on the track, Verstappen is an unstoppable four-time champion; off the track, he is a warm-hearted mentor. It turns out that the brilliance of a top driver shines not only on the circuit but also in this kindness and grace.
