[Saba Sports News] The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team held a significant internal celebration at their Brackley power unit base in the UK, officially marking the end of the F1 turbo hybrid power unit era. By showcasing several iconic engines and having two generations of racing cars appear together, the Mercedes team paid tribute to the power units that dominated the F1 stage over the past 12 years, while gearing up for the new era starting in 2026.
On the day of the event, the Mercedes High-Performance Powertrains division displayed 12 representative power units neatly arranged outdoors at the base, including the first-generation hybrid engine used in the W05 car that launched their dynasty in 2014. Reserve driver Frederik Vesti finished a lap in the W05, officially bidding farewell to the old era. Employees were able to closely experience the beginning and the conclusion of that dominating period.
Since the F1 turbo hybrid era began in 2014, Mercedes has established a dynasty, with the leading performance of their power units helping the team secure seven consecutive Drivers’ Championships and eight Constructors’ Championships, making it one of the most decisive competitive advantages of this period. Notably, in the 2014 season, all teams using Mercedes engines ranked in the top six of the Constructors’ Championship, showcasing their dominance. Statistics reveal that Mercedes power units have achieved 140 victories and 150 pole positions in 252 races, with a winning rate of 56%.
