[Saba Sports News] Former Arsenal legend Paul
Merson recently revealed in a TV interview why he departed from Arsenal in the
Premier League. After playing for Arsenal from 1985 to 1996, Merson made a
sudden move to Middlesbrough in 1997, which disappointed many Arsenal fans at
the time. Merson explained that during his early years, he faced personal
struggles, including battles with alcoholism and gambling addiction. When
considering his options, Arsenal offered him a four-year contract with an
annual salary of £580,000, while Middlesbrough presented a one-year contract
worth £1 million. The financial disparity between the two offers played a
significant role, leading him to prioritize the financial aspect and make the
decision to leave Arsenal.
