[Saba Sports News] MI Cape Town, despite assembling a strong team on paper, had a disappointing inaugural season in SA20 2023, finishing last with only three wins in 10 games. To rectify their performance, the franchise has made significant changes.
They have replaced last season’s head coach Simon Katich and bowling coach Jacob Oram. Robin Peterson, the former South African spinner who served as the MI Cape Town General Manager in 2023, has been appointed as the new head coach. Lasith Malinga, the legendary Sri Lankan pacer with a history of success with MI in the IPL, will take on the role of bowling coach. Hashim Amla will continue as the batting coach.
Peterson and Malinga previously worked together as head coach and bowling coach, respectively, for MI New York, which won the inaugural season of Major League Cricket in the USA.
MI Cape Town has retained skipper Rashid Khan, along with players like Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, and Sam Curran, for the SA20 2024 edition. They will participate in the upcoming SA20 auction to fill at least four slots.
The SA20 2024 season commences on January 10, 2024, with defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape facing Joburg Super Kings in Gqeberha. MI Cape Town’s first match is against Durban Super Giants in Durban on January 11, marking the start of their tournament campaign.
