Mushfiqur Rahim was “granted an extension of
leave” by the BCB to be with his family, therefore he will miss
Bangladesh’s Asia Cup Super Four match against India on Friday in Colombo.
After Bangladesh’s last tournament game, against Sri
Lanka on September 9, he had returned to Dhaka to be with his wife for the
birth of their second child. He had originally planned to re-join the team for
Bangladesh’s last game against India.
“Mushfiqur has informed us that his wife is still
recovering [after giving birth], and he needs to be by her side and with their
children at this time,” BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus said
in a statement. “We fully understand his situation and have decided to
permit him to skip the game.”
India’s victory over Sri Lanka on Tuesday in Colombo
ended Bangladesh’s modest chances of making the Asia Cup final. The victor of
the match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka on Thursday will play alongside India
in the championship game on Sunday. Additionally, Sri Lanka will continue due
to their higher net run-rate in the event of an abandonment.
Bangladesh’s performance at the Asia Cup has been
dismal; their lopsided victory over Afghanistan in the group stage has been the
only noteworthy outing. They batted first on that occasion and finished with a
score of 334 for 5 thanks to centuries from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul
Hossain Shanto. However, they were soundly defeated in each of their other
three games—twice by Sri Lanka and once by Pakistan.
Mushfiqur had been one of their better performers with
the bat, slotting in behind Shanto and Mehidy on the list of top run-getters
for the team with 131 from four innings at an average of 32.75, with the 64
against Pakistan his best outing
