[Saba Sports News] Ahead of IPL 2024, Mumbai Indians made a significant move by acquiring Hardik Pandya from Gujrat Titans and appointing him as the team’s captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, who is renowned as one of the most successful captains in IPL history. Under Rohit’s leadership, Mumbai clinched the title in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, but faced a title drought in the last three years.
In a bid to alter this trajectory, the team’s management entrusted Hardik with captaincy duties, citing his successful leadership with Gujarat, where they secured the title in 2022 and reached the finals in 2023. Meanwhile, Rohit will continue as a specialist batter in the squad. Former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu expressed confidence in Rohit’s ability to adapt, noting his prior experience playing alongside multiple captains in the Indian team.
Sidhu recalled his own time in the Indian team, which featured several former captains simultaneously. He emphasized that players, including Rohit, prioritized national duty over individual roles. Drawing parallels, Sidhu highlighted the transition in Chennai Super Kings, where MS Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. While acknowledging Mumbai Indians’ decision to opt for a different approach, Sidhu suggested that the franchise chose Pandya as captain due to Rohit’s recent inability to secure IPL titles.
He concluded by emphasizing the dedication required to reach Rohit’s stature as a player, acknowledging the franchise’s strategic decision while highlighting Rohit’s unparalleled contributions to the sport.
