[Saba Sports News] The WNBA announced Sunday that it is investigating allegations of racist behavior directed at Angel Reese, with speculation centering around so-called “monkey noises” heard during a recent game.
However, some believe the incident may stem from a misunderstanding.
In a statement, the league confirmed it is “aware of the allegations” that Reese was subjected to racism during Saturday’s matchup between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. No specific details were provided.
Social media users have speculated that the alleged incident involved monkey-like sounds aimed at Reese. A clip from the ESPN broadcast, widely circulated online, captured a high-pitched noise as Reese attempted a technical free throw in the Sky’s 93-58 loss.
Barstool Sports’ Jack McGuire weighed in Sunday, pointing to social media posts that accused Indiana fans of racism, though it’s unclear if the original posters were at the game. McGuire also suggested the noise in question resembled a viral laugh from streamer “FlightReacts,” a sound that has become a popular meme online.
While the WNBA has not confirmed whether the investigation relates to the broadcast audio, there is growing sentiment that the noise was likely not racially motivated.
Reese, who had an on-court altercation with Caitlin Clark during the game, has not addressed the allegations.
