[Saba Sports News] On January 23, the Badminton World Federation announced the participant list for the 2026 All England Open Badminton Championships, revealing that the South Korean team has no players qualified for men’s singles or mixed doubles, leaving them to wait for replacement opportunities in case other players withdraw due to injury.
The All England Open Badminton Championships, which began in 1899, is regarded as one of the most prestigious tournaments for badminton players, alongside the Olympics and the World Championships. South Korean players first won a title at the All England Open Badminton Championships in 1981 when Hwang Sun Ai claimed gold in women’s singles. As of last year, with victories from An Se-young and the pair of Seo Seung Jae/Kang Minhyuk, South Korea has accumulated five titles in women’s singles, eleven in men’s doubles, fourteen in women’s doubles, and ten in mixed doubles at the All England Open Badminton Championships.
In this year’s All England Open Badminton Championships, South Korea has three players in women’s singles, two pairs in men’s doubles, and three pairs in women’s doubles qualified to compete. In contrast to the strong performances in women’s singles, men’s doubles, and women’s doubles, there are no representatives for South Korea in men’s singles and mixed doubles, highlighting a stark difference. Notably, since Heo Kwang Hee reached the round of 16 in the 2022 All England Open Badminton Championships, South Korea has not had a male singles player participate for four consecutive years.
The only hope for South Korea in men’s singles is Jeon Hyeok-jin, currently ranked 34th in the world. He is the country’s top male singles player but is only second on the reserve list for the All England Open Badminton Championships. If two players who qualified for the main event withdraw before the tournament, Jeon would become the first South Korean male singles player to compete in the All England Open Badminton Championships in four years.
