[Saba Sports News] The multi-format series between New Zealand and Australia began with an entertaining start as the two teams faced off in the first T20I at Sky Stadium in Wellington on February 21.
Before the match began, Australian cricketers Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis provided a moment of humor. As they were supposed to enter the stadium with children, the youngsters dashed off just as it was Hazlewood’s turn, leading to a comedic attempt by Hazlewood and Ellis to hold hands as they made their entrance. The amusing exchange quickly became a hit on social media, with both players sharing a laugh as they proceeded onto the field.
In the match itself, New Zealand batted first upon winning the toss, with Finn Allen and Devon Conway contributing 32 and 63 runs, respectively, while Rachin Ravindra boosted the total with 68 runs, helping New Zealand reach 215 runs. Australian bowlers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Marsh each took a wicket. In response, Australia’s pursuit of 216 runs began shakily as openers Travis Head and David Warner were dismissed for 24 and 32 runs.
Captain Marsh anchored the chase with an unbeaten 72 runs off 44 balls, supported by contributions from Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis, and Tim David, who scored 25, 20, and 31* runs, enabling Australia to secure a six-wicket victory. Australia, now leading the series, looks forward to extending their success in the second T20I against New Zealand on February 23.
