[Saba Sports News] The Cleveland Cavaliers were closely watching the Paris Olympic Games and have now signed power forward JT Thor to a two-way contract, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Thor, 21, of South Sudanese descent, impressed during the Olympics, averaging 6.7 points and 4.7 rebounds off the bench for South Sudan in the group stage.
Thor’s standout moment came during a pre-Olympics exhibition game against Team USA, where he scored 14 points in just 18 minutes, showcasing his ability to draw fouls and hit multiple three-pointers.
Previously, Thor was the No. 37 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and played three seasons with the Charlotte Hornets, averaging 3.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. Despite going unsigned earlier this summer, his Olympic performance likely secured his spot with the Cavs.
The Cavaliers had been rumored to be interested in another breakout Olympic player, but they have opted to give Thor a chance while still having room for additional signings.
