[Saba Sports News] Fresh details have emerged regarding Oscar Piastri’s crash following the Canadian Grand Prix. Previously unreleased radio communications from the McLaren team revealed that Piastri was warned about excessively high rear brake temperatures shortly before he collided with Alexander Albon. This has led to widespread speculation that brake issues were a major contributing factor to the incident.
McLaren suffered a strategic blunder right from the start of the race. As the track gradually dried, the team sent both Piastri and Lando Norris off the line on intermediate tyres. The pair were soon forced to pit for tyre changes. Norris later retired due to a gearbox malfunction, while Piastri also endured a turbulent race. Mid-race, Piastri began complaining about abnormal car performance, reporting issues with downshifts over team radio. His engineer replied that the crew was working to manage rear brake temperatures. Seconds later, the crash happened. At Turn 10 hairpin, Piastri attempted to overtake Haas driver Oliver Bearman on the inside. His car suffered a severe brake lock-up, veered off course and slammed into the side of Albon’s vehicle.
Albon retired on the spot. Piastri headed to the pits with a damaged front wing and was handed a ten-second time penalty after the incident. Right after the race, Piastri apologized to Albon and the Williams team. He stated that he had no intention of overtaking Albon, and the crash was caused by a sudden total loss of grip.
