[Saba Sports News] Pakistan’s World Cup campaign faces uncertainty as key bowler Naseem Shah is doubtful for the tournament. Naseem, a crucial part of the team’s bowling attack, has suffered a severe shoulder injury that puts his participation in the October 5 to November 19 championship in doubt, with even partial participation uncertain.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a statement, saying, “The PCB medical team has been closely monitoring Naseem Shah’s shoulder injury sustained during the Asia Cup 2023.
Consultations with medical experts are ongoing to provide the best possible care. Naseem’s return to cricket will be determined by the PCB medical panel based on further assessments.”
Doubts regarding Naseem’s availability emerged after Pakistan was eliminated from the Asia Cup. He did not participate in the crucial Super 4 match against Sri Lanka, which Pakistan lost in a final-ball thriller.
Sources within PCB have indicated that Naseem’s medical reports will be sent to the UK for expert advice, and the team management will make decisions accordingly. However, his prospects for participation in the World Cup appear bleak at this stage. Naseem has played 17 Tests, 14 ODIs, and 19 T20Is in his career.
On the other hand, PCB officials are optimistic about Haris Rauf’s availability for the World Cup. Rauf missed the game against Sri Lanka due to rib cage pain but does not have a significant injury. He is expected to be fit for the tournament.
The PCB is set to review the team’s performance in the Asia Cup. The team, considered favorites, failed to reach the final. Chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, head of the cricket committee Misbah-ul-Haq, and selector Mohammad Hafeez will attend the meeting, scheduled for Monday. Reports suggest that the PCB may limit its players’ participation in overseas T20 leagues, except for the PSL, to ensure their fitness.
Pakistan is scheduled to depart for India on September 25, reaching Hyderabad two days later via Dubai. Their first World Cup match is on October 6 against the Netherlands, with the highly anticipated clash against India taking place in Ahmedabad on October 14.
