[Saba Sports News] Australia faces the challenge of replacing David Warner as their Test opening batsman, and while several options are on the table, captain Pat Cummins isn’t keen on moving Steve Smith from the middle-order. Smith, a former captain and Test cricket stalwart, expressed his interest in opening, but Cummins prefers to maintain his current batting order.
Cummins praised the current middle-order lineup, including Smith at No. 4, Marnus Labuschagne at No. 3, and others, suggesting a reluctance to disrupt this setup. “I’m pretty happy with [Smith] at No. 4… First instinct isn’t to disrupt that,” Cummins remarked following a series win over Pakistan.
Labuschagne, currently batting at No. 3, is content with his position and also acknowledged Smith’s desire for a new challenge. He pointed out Smith’s impressive averages at various batting positions, indicating his potential success as an opener.
Australia’s selectors are expected to discuss Warner’s replacement on January 8, considering options like Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, Matt Renshaw, and potentially Travis Head, who ruled himself out despite having opened in India. Another unconventional choice could be all-rounder Cameron Green, who has not opened in first-class cricket but has experience as a T20I opener.
Cummins emphasized the need for a replacement who can maintain pressure on the opposition and keep the scoreboard moving. He believes that performers in domestic cricket are likely candidates for success at the Test level. “It’s hard to replicate what Davey brought, but we’re looking for someone best placed to score runs,” Cummins concluded.
