[Saba Sports News] Paul George recently opened up about the fallout in his relationship with Chris Paul on an episode of his podcast, Podcast P with Paul George. Once close friends, their bond deteriorated following a heated on-court exchange that George described as a turning point in their relationship.
“I’m not the fondest of CP these days,” George admitted. “People don’t know this, but me and CP used to have a great relationship. He even helped me get LASIK—he recommended an eye doctor, and my vision’s been great since. That’s the level of our relationship back then, where I could call him up for something personal like that.”
George recalled how their friendship unraveled during a game against Paul’s Phoenix Suns.
“It might’ve been a playoff matchup or a regular season game—I can’t remember—but we got into it. Words were exchanged that shouldn’t have been said between two men. That drew the line for me. Once you cross that line with me, you’re staying on that side.”
He added, “I don’t know if it’s that little-man syndrome, but CP’s definitely got that competitive nature. I respect OGs 100% and give them their flowers, but if you cross me, I can’t respect that.”
The rivalry between George and Paul reached its peak during the 2021 Western Conference Finals, where George’s Clippers faced Paul’s Suns. Tensions flared throughout the series, with both players exchanging heated words.
Chris Paul’s on-court intensity has been well-documented, with his trash-talking and aggressive style often leading to similar conflicts with other players. Despite their animosity, both George and Paul remain highly respected figures in the NBA.
George, now with the Philadelphia 76ers, continues to excel as a two-way player, while Paul, in his first season with the San Antonio Spurs, recently became the second-highest assist provider in league history.
While fans may hope for reconciliation, George’s comments suggest the divide is too deep to bridge. The fallout highlights how intense competition can leave lasting effects, even among some of the NBA’s most accomplished players.
