[Saba Sports News] The Detroit Pistons are securing their franchise cornerstone, Cade Cunningham.
Cunningham has agreed to a five-year, $226 million contract, according multiple sources. This deal is the maximum Detroit can offer him after his rookie contract and could increase if the 22-year-old makes an All-NBA team next season. Earlier reports indicated a rookie max extension for Cunningham was a foregone conclusion.
The Pistons also boast young talents like Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, and lottery pick Ausar Thompson, but Cunningham stands out on a team that finished with a league-worst 14-68 record last season. Cunningham averaged 22.7 points and 7.5 assists per game on 44.9% shooting from the field and 35.5% from three-point range, all career highs for the 6’6″ guard.
With a fresh start this offseason, the Pistons aim to improve their fortunes. They fired head coach Monty Williams despite his hefty contract and replaced him with a veteran coach who recently helped another team end its playoff drought.
