[Saba Sports News] Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores addressed the calls from fans to sell the team, which arose during Thursday’s game as the team faced its 25th consecutive loss. Responding to the “sell the team” chants, Gores recognized the fans’ frustrations but described the demand as “ridiculous,” citing the significant contributions the ownership has made to the community.
Gores, as quoted by James L. Edwards III, said, “They can say what they want, but that’s ridiculous. Other than winning — and we should win more games — we do a lot in the community. Players, the organization, we do a lot in the community. If you put aside winning, we’ve made a very big difference in the community. That means a lot to me. I understand that’s only going to mean a lot to people if we win, but the underworking of what’s happening and with our community, over all these years, is there. We’re doing multibillion-dollar things outside of (basketball). I understand the fans being upset, but it’s a ridiculous thought.”
Despite Gores emphasizing the team’s community engagement, fans remain primarily focused on the team’s poor performance, with a 2-26 record. The Pistons have only made the playoffs twice since Gores took ownership, and were eliminated early each time. Gores had committed to a rebuild nearly four years ago, but there is debate over whether the team has made any real progress since then. The roster has young talent but lacks shooters and seems to have an overabundance of big men. While fan discontent is evident, Gores clearly intends to stay with the team.
