[Saba Sports News] The unveiling of the early matches for the IPL 2024 by the BCCI highlighted that the Delhi Capitals are set to play their initial two home games in Visakhapatnam, deviating from their traditional venue at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. This shift has sparked curiosity among IPL followers, given the stadium’s regular inclusion in the IPL roster.
The relocation is primarily due to concerns about the Arun Jaitley Stadium’s pitch and outfield sustainability, following its hosting of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) matches. The latter stages of the WPL, including the Eliminator and the final, are scheduled at this venue, raising questions about the ground’s readiness for subsequent IPL games. The WPL is set to occupy the Delhi stadium from March 5 to 17, following its commencement at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium on February 23.
A BCCI official involved in the planning process indicated that the decision was made to give the ground a break after the WPL’s extensive use. It has been confirmed by sources to Cricbuzz that after these initial matches in Visakhapatnam, the Delhi Capitals will return to their home ground for the rest of their league matches.
The choice to host the first two home matches in Visakhapatnam was made by the franchise and endorsed by the BCCI. According to the BCCI’s schedule announcement, the Delhi Capitals will welcome Chennai Super Kings on March 31 and Kolkata Knight Riders on April 3 at the coastal city.
