[Saba Sports News] Gregg Popovich may receive a tribute far more monumental than a statue for his impact on San Antonio.
On Wednesday, outgoing city councilman Manny Pelaez formally proposed renaming the San Antonio International Airport in honor of the legendary Spurs coach. The proposal, submitted to the city clerk, aims to recognize Popovich’s lasting influence both on and off the court.
“Coach Popovich’s impact on San Antonio is immeasurable,” the proposal states. “He has not only brought unparalleled success and recognition to our city through his legendary coaching, but he has also become a deeply respected and admired figure within our community. His unwavering commitment to social justice, his philanthropic endeavors, and his genuine care for the people of San Antonio have made him a true icon.”
Earlier this month, Popovich officially announced his retirement as head coach of the Spurs following a 29-year tenure, a decision that came after a medical emergency in April. Beyond guiding the franchise to five NBA championships, the 76-year-old has been a vocal advocate for social causes and a beloved community figure.
While Popovich’s coaching era has come to a close, his legacy in San Antonio could soon take flight—literally—with the city considering renaming its international airport in his honor.
