[Saba Sports News] The 2026 London Marathon kicked off last Sunday, and Formula 1 legendary driver Sebastian Vettel delivered an impressive performance, successfully crossing the iconic three-hour finishing threshold for marathon runners.
The 38-year-old four-time F1 World Champion completed the race amid hot weather in London, raising funds for two charities, the Grand Prix Trust and the Brain & Spine Foundation. Vettel finished the full 26.2-mile course with an official time of 2 hours 59 minutes and 08 seconds, comfortably breaking the three-hour barrier. It is an outstanding result for an amateur runner. Interestingly, the Kenyan elite long-distance runner who broke the men’s marathon world record in the same event shares the exact same given name as Vettel — also named Sebastian.
After crossing the finish line, Vettel smiled during media interviews and described the London Marathon as a one-of-a-kind experience. He revealed that this was his first-ever marathon, and he had not expected to finish it at all before the race. The roadsides were packed with cheering crowds, and the incredible atmosphere made the whole experience absolutely amazing. It turns out Vettel has kept up a regular fitness routine for years, sticking to long-distance running and cycling, which inspired him to take on the marathon challenge.
In my opinion, breaking the three-hour mark is regarded as a key watershed for amateur runners stepping up to an elite level in the marathon community. As an F1 star crossing over to achieve this milestone, Vettel sets a great example. He not only achieved a personal breakthrough but also leveraged his sporting influence to support charitable causes, and his performance is well worthy of high praise.
