[Saba Sports News] Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer can finally breathe easy. After weeks of speculation surrounding a recurring back issue, Iyer has been cleared to play in IPL 2024. However, his participation comes with a caveat – a specific alteration to his batting technique.
Iyer’s back woes began during the recently concluded Ranji Trophy final, forcing him to miss the crucial final two days. Following the NCA’s initial assessment, Iyer consulted a renowned spine specialist in Mumbai for a more in-depth evaluation. This specialist, as per reports, has given Iyer the green light to play, but with a crucial restriction.
The specialist has advised Iyer to avoid overextending his front leg while playing the forward defense shot. This defensive maneuver apparently puts a strain on Iyer’s lower back.
“He is fit to play, a specialist spine doctor was consulted in Mumbai who
has advised him not to stretch his leg too forward while defending the
ball. He has joined IPL franchise KKR and he can play,” a source said as quoted to The Indian Express.
This clearance is a significant turnaround for Iyer, who missed the entirety of IPL 2023 due to this very back issue. Last year, the discomfort forced him to undergo surgery, causing him to miss not only the IPL but also the World Test Championship final.
Notably, KKR will commence their campaign versus Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23.
