[Saba Sports News] Wanindu Hasaranga will be absent from the IPL 2024 season due to an injury, as communicated by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to the BCCI, making him unavailable to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The franchise is reportedly seeking a replacement for the leg-spinner. SLC’s notification to the BCCI explained that Hasaranga requires rehabilitation and rest for his injured left ankle, following advice from a medical expert in Dubai, where Hasaranga sought consultation recently.
His manager, Shyam, confirmed to Cricbuzz that SLC has officially informed the BCCI of Hasaranga’s unavailability for the season, emphasizing the medical recommendation for rest over participation in the IPL.
Despite earlier indications that Hasaranga would join Sunrisers Hyderabad, his withdrawal now underscores concerns about foreign players withdrawing after the auction for various reasons. SLC’s decision comes amidst scheduling conflicts, as Hasaranga was selected for a Test series in Bangladesh that coincided with the IPL’s start on March 22.
Interestingly, a recall from retirement for the Test series also means Hasaranga avoids a potential lead role in the T20 World Cup’s initial games due to an ICC disciplinary action.
There’s speculation about foreign players’ commitment to the IPL, especially when auction prices are considered low. Hasaranga, who was released by RCB, saw his auction price drop to the base price of INR 1.5 crores for this season, a significant decrease from his previous IPL contract.
However, his manager denies that the auction price influenced Hasaranga’s withdrawal from the league.
