[Saba Sports News] Indiana Fever veteran Sophie Cunningham made it clear on Tuesday that she has Caitlin Clark’s back.
During a heated matchup at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Clark and Connecticut Sun guard Jacy Sheldon were locked in a tense battle from the opening tip.
The two had a first-quarter altercation that required referee intervention, and the tension escalated in the second half when Sheldon caught Clark in the eye — an incident that led to Sun guard Marina Mabrey shoving Clark to the floor.
Cunningham later inserted herself into the fray in the final minute of the game. As Sheldon raced down the court on a fast break, Cunningham stopped her with a hard foul, dragging her to the ground before she could get a shot off. After Sheldon got back to her feet, the two exchanged shoves.
Cunningham, Sheldon, and Connecticut’s Lindsay Allen were all ejected following the altercation. Despite the physicality, Indiana pulled away for an 88-71 win.
Cunningham and Clark have built a strong rapport since Cunningham joined the Fever earlier this season, and that bond was on full display in Tuesday’s showdown. Cunningham finished with five points and seven rebounds off the bench, while Sheldon recorded two points and three assists in the loss.
