The decision by South Africa to send a temporary Test
squad to New Zealand has raised questions about whether it will be a turning
point for the format going forward, according to two former captains of
Australia. One of those pathways already has a former South African captain on
it, which may tell us everything we need to know.
Though Michael Clarke and Steve Waugh emphasise the
importance of Test cricket, Graeme Smith, a 117-time Test player, is the SA20
commissioner. It is in this competition that South Africa’s Test regulars will
compete rather than going on tour to New Zealand. That is, in essence, the
topic that has spurred discussions about Test cricket in the early days of
2024, and it isn’t as black-and-white as either side would have you believe.
In summary, last year Cricket South Africa (CSA) and
commercial broadcaster SuperSport collaborated to develop a Twenty20
competition with six teams owned by IPL franchise owners. It came after two
abortive attempts to establish a Twenty20 league with the goal of ensuring
South African cricket’s financial stability. The week following the New Year’s
Test marks the start of the SA20’s agreed-upon window, which finishes in early
February. Like the majority of these competitions worldwide, its goal was to draw
attention by fielding well-known athletes. Furthermore, CSA has the authority
to determine that the SA20 should come first for its centrally contracted
players because it is the tournament’s largest stakeholder. even the
international matches for South Africa.
In order to start the SA20 with its best players,
South Africa gave up an ODI Super League series in Australia last year that
counted towards World Cup qualification. In keeping with its bilateral
obligations, CSA is sending a Test team to New Zealand during the SA20 this
year, albeit one that may include seven debutants and a new captain. Waugh and
Clarke begin to express concern about the future of Test cricket.
It’s not that South Africans or the CSA don’t value
Test cricket. However, Test cricket isn’t able to cover the CSA’s expenses or
player compensation, so the board has had to come up with additional revenue
streams to compete with other nations who generate a lot of money from T20
leagues.
It’s simpler to claim in Australia, where players are
highly paid, that “history and tradition must count for something,”
and that “if we stand by and allow profits to be the defining criteria the
legacy of Bradman, Grace, and Sobers will be irrelevant,” as Waugh stated
in an Instagram post.
Thus, whereas
Mitchell Starc’s record IPL deal of INR 24.75 crore (about USD 2.98 million) is
scarcely insignificant in Australia, where it is valued at nearly $4.38
million, it would be enormous in South Africa, where it is valued at over 55
million rands.
“As long as I am around, I am going to be a Test
fanatic,” Elgar said. “A lot of our guys are Test fanatics but
opportunities need to come our way, otherwise the conversations are just going
to be continuous and you are never going to put it to bed. We are just players
and we can fight as much as we can but it’s up to the powers that be to make
the right calls for us.”
