[Saba Sports News] According to reports from Spanish media, the Spanish video referee scandal has been revealed. Carlos Gomez, the head of Spanish video referees, acted as a substitute referee for VAR in the Madrid derby last September. However, it has been discovered that he does not possess the necessary qualifications and is not a professional referee yet. The role of the VAR substitute referee is to take over the duties of VAR or AVAR if they are unable to perform. The alternate referee and VAR are located in separate rooms, using the same audio equipment to monitor the game. Carlos Gomez mentioned in an interview, “In the alternate referee’s room, there is someone responsible for following the game through the stadium’s audio and reporting any important incidents to the technical committee where I sit.” However, reports suggest that the alternate referee room can directly communicate with the VAR room. The duties of the alternate referee also include alerting VAR to any missed or incorrect decisions, and everything that occurs in the alternate referee room does not leave a trace. This means that the alternate referee room can communicate with anyone without leaving a record.
