[Saba Sports News] After being overshadowed by the Dallas Mavericks’ NBA Finals run, the San Antonio Spurs may be aiming to steal back the spotlight.
Veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein wrote on Substack that there are persistent rumors about the Spurs potentially trading up to the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Stein suggests that San Antonio is keen on selecting seven-footer Alexandre “Alex” Sarr if they can secure the top spot.
Sarr, a 19-year-old standout who played for the Perth Wildcats in Australia, is expected to be among the top two or three picks. This poses a challenge for the Spurs, who currently hold the No. 4 pick, prompting them to consider trading up.
San Antonio selected Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick last year. Pairing Wembanyama with Sarr, another seven-footer and fellow Frenchman, would be enticing due to Sarr’s athleticism, foot speed, and developing jump shot, allowing him to play multiple positions.
Sarr recently gained attention for his complimentary remarks about Wembanyama. A trade-up would require cooperation from the current top-pick holder, the Atlanta Hawks. Given their history of collaboration, including the Dejounte Murray trade in 2022, a deal could be possible. If the Spurs can’t secure Sarr, they still have other intriguing options in the draft.
