[Saba Sports News] Victor Wembanyama remains sidelined for the season due to a blood-clotting issue, but his recovery appears to be moving in the right direction.
On Friday, the San Antonio Spurs provided a notable health update on their star center, announcing that Wembanyama has been cleared to fly by team doctors, according to veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein. As a result, Wembanyama traveled with the team to Sacramento to support teammate De’Aaron Fox in his first game against his former team, the Kings. ESPN’s Michael C. Wright also shared a photo of Wembanyama sitting on the Spurs’ bench before the game.
The 21-year-old was ruled out for the remainder of the season just over two weeks ago after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder. The diagnosis initially raised concerns among fans, especially given Wembanyama’s towering 7-foot-3 frame. Comparisons were drawn to 11-time NBA All-Star Chris Bosh, whose career ended prematurely after a blood clot in his leg traveled to his lungs in 2016.
However, Wembanyama’s clearance to fly so soon after his diagnosis is an encouraging sign. His condition differs from Bosh’s, as his clot is localized in his shoulder rather than in his leg.
Before being sidelined, the former No. 1 overall pick was averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and a league-leading 3.8 blocks per game in 46 appearances. San Antonio remains optimistic that Wembanyama will make a full recovery and be ready for the start of the 2025-26 season, with his recent clearance to travel serving as another positive step in his recovery.
