[Saba Sports News] According to British media reports, Sunderland will wear a special edition jersey featuring a unique club badge in this weekend’s Championship match to highlight the destructive impact of rising sea levels due to climate change on coastal areas. This special badge is based on an older version of Sunderland’s badge from the 1990s and visually demonstrates and simulates the effects of rising sea levels: the rising water has submerged the word “SUNDERLAND.” After the weekend match, the jerseys worn by the players will be auctioned to raise funds for green and sustainable environmental projects. Since 1880, the global average sea level has risen by 21-24 centimeters, and the rate of increase has accelerated in recent decades. Currently, the Roker Pier at Sunderland Port remains closed. In response, Sunderland stated in a club announcement: “Every year, 120,000 football matches are canceled due to flooding. It is estimated that in 25 years, a quarter of our stadium will be submerged by seawater.” When the tides rise, it threatens not just the football field but also humanity’s future survival. Sunderland emphasized that this jersey serves as both a warning and a call for more people worldwide to pay attention to the journey toward carbon neutrality to protect the environment.
