[Saba Sports News] Former Indian cricket star Yusuf Pathan has embarked on a new journey in Indian politics, emerging as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate for the Berhampore seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha election in West Bengal. This surprising move by the TMC, pitting Pathan against the formidable Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the Congress, has generated significant interest.
Yusuf Pathan’s entry into politics marks a bold move for the TMC, as he prepares to challenge Chowdhury, a five-time Member of Parliament from the Indian National Congress (INC). Chowdhury has held sway over the Berhampore constituency since 1999, making it a stronghold for the INC.
Pathan’s illustrious career in cricket, both at the national level and with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has earned him widespread recognition and a devoted fan base. Now, leveraging his sporting fame, he aims to harness public support with a commitment to serve the welfare of the people as his primary objective in entering politics.
In a recent statement to Anandabazar Patrika, Pathan expressed his intention to bring cricket superstars to his election campaign, stating, “Since I am here, all the cricket superstars whom I know… those people here are eager to see, will come. I will arrange for the general voters to see them and talk to them.” Additionally, he mentioned that his brother and fellow cricketer, Irfan Pathan, would also join the campaign if his schedule permits.
During Pathan’s recent visit to the constituency for the Holi festival, his pledge received enthusiastic support from the audience. His appreciation for the cultural heritage of West Bengal, combined with the promise of facilitating interactions with cricketing icons, struck a chord with the crowd.
