[Saba Sports News] A teenager was hospitalized after a shooting at the Ohio elementary school founded by NBA star LeBron James.
According to a news release from Lt. Michael Murphy of the Akron Police Department, a 17-year-old was shot on May 24 at the I PROMISE School in Akron, Ohio, as reported by the Akron Beacon Journal. The victim was taken to the hospital by someone at the scene.
Police recovered nearly two dozen shell casings in the area. Authorities have not released further details about the victim, including their identity or the severity of the injuries.
The I PROMISE School, established in 2018 by the LeBron James Family Foundation, is part of the Lakers star’s effort to support at-risk youth in his hometown.
Initially launched for third and fourth graders, it now serves students in grades 1 through 8 and currently enrolls 517 students, per the Ohio Department of Education.
This incident comes just two years after a separate tragedy at the same location, where another 17-year-old was fatally beaten near the school’s basketball courts.
James, a 21-time NBA All-Star and Akron native, left the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2018 to join the Los Angeles Lakers but has remained actively involved in his foundation’s initiatives in the city.
