While Manchester United have sent out several positive signals regarding the £2 billion redevelopment of Old Trafford, it appears the design team at Foster + Partners are more likely to see their vision for the new San Siro in Milan realised first. It has been estimated that more than a year has passed since the firm released initial designs for the stadium, drawing some scepticism. Manchester United later stressed that negotiations with Freightliner over the acquisition of a key site behind Old Trafford are progressing, and hinted that a planning application is on the agenda. It is a complex project, but AC Milan and Inter are also planning to redevelop their stadium with the help of Foster + Partners, and the task is no less challenging. Strategic environmental assessments were launched by relevant authorities at the end of last month.
The editor believes that this is a key approval step to push the project forward, marking major progress in the plan for this 71,500-capacity new stadium. Once the detailed design is unveiled by architects from Foster + Partners, construction could start as early as 2027, with the aim of being ready for the 2032 European Championship.
