[Saba Sports News] According to British media reports, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has been sued for alleged fraud in the acquisition of the American film and television Golden Globes. A group of anonymous former members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) submitted a relevant legal document to the California Attorney General’s Office. This comes after the American magazine Puck first reported on the matter, leading the California prosecutors to investigate issues surrounding Boehly’s 2023 acquisition of the Golden Globes. The indictment claims that Boehly acted as both the “buyer” and “seller” in the transaction. Court documents also show that Boehly was appointed as the interim head of HFPA during the acquisition process and signed off on the deal. In 2023, Boehly’s private equity firm Eldridge Industries acquired the American film and television Golden Globes as well as Dick Clark Productions, owned by media mogul Jay Penske. The lawsuit alleges that Boehly introduced Penske into the deal as a partner without obtaining HFPA’s consent. The legal documents indicate that this move was intended to superficially clear Boehly of any conflicts of interest and misconduct in this self-dealing transaction. The allegations claim that Boehly and Penske engaged in fraudulent activities during the acquisition, violating their fiduciary duties, particularly in their attempts to transform HFPA into a for-profit entity.
