[Saba Sports News] In the summer of 2016, the Boston Celtics went all out in their efforts to secure Kevin Durant’s signature. Surprisingly, even Tom Brady was part of their recruitment strategy. But did the legendary quarterback influence Durant’s decision in another direction?
Rich Kleiman, Durant’s longtime agent and business partner, recently shared insights on various topics during an appearance on Showtime’s ‘All the Smoke.’ He recalled the numerous individuals who made their pitches to Durant during that time. Among them was Tom Brady, and Kleiman revealed that the former New England Patriots star played a role in Durant ultimately choosing to sign with the Golden State Warriors.
Kleiman reminisced, “I remember when the Celtics came. It was the Celtics’ ownership, Danny Ainge, Jae Crowder, and Kelly Olynyk, but then came Tom Brady.” Kleiman added, “It seemed like they were really making a strong effort. Brady and Durant even took a walk together, I believe. Later on, KD said, ‘He essentially told me to seek out the best team, the best organization, and the best chance to win, no matter what. I think Brady just advised me to go to the Warriors, bro.'”
Brady’s advice to Durant was undoubtedly sincere. When Brady mentioned the “best organization,” he may have been referring to the Celtics, given their esteemed reputation in sports. However, it became evident that the Warriors offered Durant the most promising opportunity for victory.
While other prominent Boston athletes also tried to sway Durant toward the Celtics, their combined efforts fell short. The Celtics’ decision to involve Brady in their recruitment strategy appeared to have backfired in hindsight.
