[Saba Sports News] The controversy surrounding the engine compression ratios for the 2026 season is heating up and is approaching a critical juncture. In response, Toto Wolff stated that regardless of the FIA’s voting results, the Mercedes team will accept and implement them without resorting to legal action. Wolff believes that whether the status quo is maintained or the rules are modified, the impact on the team will be minimal. He hopes that the team’s bold innovations will contribute to the development of the sport. It is reported that the related proposal has been submitted for electronic voting, and if it receives a super majority support, the rules may be adjusted starting August 1. The focal point of this controversy lies in the technical regulations regarding the measurement method for the maximum 16:1 compression ratio. A clause updated in October 2025 stipulates testing under environmental temperatures, which is considered to leave ambiguity. Rumors suggest that Mercedes’ high-performance power unit department is exploiting this difference to achieve a higher compression ratio during track conditions while meeting the standards in bench tests.
The editor believes that similar technical boundary issues may continue to arise in the early stages of the new regulations. However, regardless of whether the current environmental testing or potential new testing methods are used, it is likely that all power units will find a way to pass inspection, suggesting that the controversy may soon subside.
