[Saba Sports News] According to British media reports, UEFA has chosen Cardiff, Wales, to host the opening match of the 2028 European Championship, dashing England’s hopes of staging the opening game at Wembley Stadium. Initially, the 2028 European Championship was slated to be a joint hosting effort between the United Kingdom (consisting of the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) and Ireland. However, recent developments indicate that Northern Ireland may withdraw due to financial constraints. In the event of a withdrawal, the four matches originally scheduled for Belfast would be relocated to Wembley, Cardiff, Dublin, and Glasgow. England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland still need to qualify for the 2028 European Championship. UEFA will ultimately determine the two host nations. If more than two of these five teams fail to qualify through the qualifiers, the two highest-ranked teams among those who do not qualify will be awarded berths in the 2028 European Championship.
