[Saba Sports News] George Russell has yet to sign a new contract with Mercedes, reigniting speculation in the F1 driver market. Although Max Verstappen remains contracted with Red Bull until 2028, the possibility of an early exit still exists. According to insiders, if Verstappen falls outside the top three in the championship standings at any point in the 2025 season, he can invoke a clause allowing him to terminate his contract early, potentially paving the way for a move to Mercedes in 2026. Former F1 driver and commentator Karun Chandhok noted that while Mercedes continues discussions with Verstappen, an immediate contract extension from Russell would complicate matters. It’s speculated that Mercedes may offer Russell a short-term deal to leave space open for Verstappen in 2027. While this flexibility creates opportunities for the team, it introduces considerable uncertainty for Russell. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff did not deny having contact with Verstappen, emphasizing that such negotiations should remain confidential. From the editorial standpoint, ahead of the major rule changes in 2026, Verstappen’s decision will likely become the central factor influencing the entire driver market. He may wait until observing the performances of the four leading teams during the 2025 season before making a final decision on his future. As long as Verstappen does not explicitly commit to staying at Red Bull, all teams will keep their doors open for him.
