[Saba Sports News] The San Antonio Spurs dropped shocking news on Thursday, announcing that Victor Wembanyama will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his shoulder.
The condition, a type of blood clot, was discovered after Wembanyama returned from the NBA All-Star Game in San Francisco. While the Spurs reportedly believe this is an isolated issue, many fans are deeply concerned about the young star’s future.
Wembanyama’s diagnosis immediately drew comparisons to former Miami Heat star Chris Bosh, who was forced to step away from the NBA after being diagnosed with recurring blood clots in 2016.
Bosh, then 32, had a clot that moved from his calf to his lungs, a far more severe and life-threatening condition. He never played another NBA game, despite not formally retiring for more than two years.
While there are key differences between the two cases—Wembanyama’s clot is localized to his shoulder, whereas Bosh’s condition affected his lungs—the unexpected nature of the diagnosis has left fans uneasy.
Given Wembanyama’s young age (21) and the Spurs’ cautious approach, many hope his situation will be more akin to that of Brandon Ingram, who was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder in 2019. Ingram missed the final 19 games of that season but has since returned to play at a high level.
The sudden nature of the announcement, especially after Wembanyama participated in All-Star Weekend, only adds to the uncertainty.
While the Spurs are prioritizing his long-term health, fans can’t help but worry about what this means for the towering phenom’s future in the league.
